EVENT SPECIFICS

Qualifying Procedure and DUELS

 

  • Qualifying for the Daytona 500 is a unique event in Motorsports and even more so in the Majors. Finding the balance between raw pace and race craft is more important in this race then perhaps any other. 

  • For the first Pro split and the first Sportsman split in each region, 24 spots will be earned in the Duels and 12 spots will be earned in Qualifying (and / or with Provisionals if needed)

  • The Duels are optional, Qualifying is not. 

  • Qualifying sessions will begin on Saturday, Feb 1st and will run through Sat, Feb 8th (6:00 pm Pacific).

  • The Front row of Pro1 and Sport1 will be locked in after Qualifying on Wednesday.

  • Each region will have Two Duels that will be set up as a tournament in the hosted area of iRacing.

  • Drivers must only compete in their own regions Duels.

  • Drivers may compete in both Duels 

  • Top 12 drivers per Duel will advance to the Pro1 or Sport1 splits. 

  • Duel must have at least 20 drivers compete to advance 12 drivers. 
    If Duel has between 15 and 20 drivers then 8 drivers will advance. 
    If Duel has less than 15 drivers, zero drivers will advance. 
    If less than 12 drivers auto advance those spots will be allocated to drivers based on qualifying time. 

  • CPI is IN EFFECT during the Duels and any penalties levied could result in grid penalties for the 500.

Grid Procedure | Pro1 & Sport1

  • Row 1 | Earned by the two fastest qualifying times

  • 3rd thru 26th | Earned thru the Duels

  • 27th thru 36th | Earned by qualifying time (and / or provisionals) in any of the available qualifying sessions throughout the week 

  • All other splits will be grid by Qualifying Time

Additional Rules & Procedures 

 

  • Drivers must maintain their lanes on restarts until past S/F line.

  • No passing ON OR BELOW double yellow line (apron). 

  • Lap cars to stay on top lane once lead cars within 1 second on relative (F3 Box).

  • Damaged cars must be able to hit a minimum safe speed (53s lap times).

  • Bump Drafting is discouraged, but IS legal. Protested incidents related to its use will be heavily scrutinized. 
    - Incidents where one driver was not a willing participant will be judged more critically and the penalty may vary based on the extent of the impact to other drivers.
